KAIT - Getting Started
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
01 How KAIT Works
KAIT is a smartpen, patterned paper, and adaptive AI working together to capture how a student solves a math problem, stroke by stroke, so their thinking becomes visible to you, not just their final answer.
Students work on paper with a pen, the way they do on classwork and on state tests. That means far less screen time for students and far more evidence for you: where a student hesitated, where the process broke down, and which step actually caused the wrong answer.
No. KAIT is a diagnostic and practice engine that runs alongside whatever curriculum your school has adopted. Teachers use it to find and close skill gaps, form small groups, and give targeted practice; not to replace core instruction.
Classroom teachers, math interventionists and specialists, after-school and intervention programs, tutoring and test-prep settings, and homeschool families (through Swoop!, our family product).
02 Devices & Setup
- Initial setup: a Mac or PC with a USB-A data port (a charge-only port won't work).
- After setup: students can work on a Mac, PC, or Chromebook with internet access and Bluetooth.
- Printing: a laser printer for printing assessments and rosters.
Yes. The Pen Streamer is the small application that lets the pen send a student's strokes to their KAIT account. It gets installed once on each device students will use. Your onboarding email includes the download link and a short walkthrough video, and your customer success contact can walk your team through it live if IT prefers.
Send your IT contact the KAIT device requirements one-pager (your customer success contact will provide it) before launch day. The two things IT usually needs to approve are the “Router” download on teachers’ devices and the “Pen Streamer” install for Bluetooth access on student devices.
Your school receives a class login sheet with credentials and the login link before launch. Teachers log in to the teacher platform; students log in on their own device with their assigned credentials.
We do. Send your roster to your customer success contact and our team creates the classes and student accounts for you. If a student joins mid-year, send us the name and we'll add them as quickly as possible.
03 Pens, Paper & Capture
No. The micro-pattern printed on the page is how the pen knows exactly where it is on the sheet. Regular notebook paper won't work. Teachers need to print KAIT assessments and rosters using a laser printer using normal printer paper. We recommend using Adobe Acrobat, or Acrobat Reader and always printing at 100%, no "fit to page" scaling, or the pattern won't read.
This is a common worry, so teach it on day one: the pen gives a light/haptic confirmation when it's capturing. Make sure students do not turn pens on and off and double check that the light is on throughout use.
The pen pairs to the device by Bluetooth and streams through the Pen Streamer, so the device needs to be on and connected during the session. If Wi-Fi drops mid-problem, have the student keep working then reconnect and continue training.
Pens charge in the cradles shipped with your kit. Most sites leave the pens in cradles when they are not in use.
Number each pen to a student so the same pen goes to the same person every session. A charged pen and a numbered pen solve about half of all day-to-day issues.
- Confirm the pen is charged and powered on.
- Confirm the Pen Streamer is open on the device.
- Re-pair the pen via Bluetooth.
- Confirm ink levels.
- Swap in a spare pen so the student keeps working, and flag the pen for support.
Always keep one or two spares so no student loses instructional minutes to hardware.
No. Pens, cradles, and paper stay with your site. If a pen fails, contact support and we'll arrange a replacement.
04 In the Classroom
Commit to at LEAST two training sessions per week, on a set schedule. Consistency matters more than length and students who train twice a week on a predictable schedule progress far faster than students who do one long session when there's time.
It takes roughly seven training sessions for the adaptive engine to personalize to a student. After that it keeps adjusting continuously as the student's skills change. Inform students and families the first two weeks are calibration, not verdict.
Circulate, watch the work on paper, read the questions and ask “how did you solve that?” Because you can see processes and not just answers, you can catch a misconception in the moment instead of at grading time. Many teachers create targeted student groups to address common misconceptions.
Yes. Teachers can move students between sections at any time.
Absolutely, and many teachers do. KAIT is the diagnostic layer underneath your practice. It isn't meant to displace the checks for understanding you already trust.
Talk to your customer success contact about sequencing. For groups significantly below grade level, we often recommend starting with the prior year's skills assessment, training on that content for about three months, and then moving to the current grade-level assessment. It lowers the reading barrier, builds confidence, and pre-exposes students to concepts before they're formally assessed on them.
05 Assessments & Data
Students complete a skills assessment during a set window at the start of your implementation. It establishes each student's starting point, drives their initial placement, and gives you a baseline for goal-setting. Your customer success contact confirms the window with your site.
Assessment pages are printed on printer paper using a laser printer. Provide the assessment within the agreed upon window.
Year One has one goal: data fluency. By the end of it, you should be able to open the teacher platform and confidently answer three questions:
- Which students share the same skill gap right now? (grouping)
- Which gaps are persistent rather than one-off? (targeting)
- What does this student's process tell me that their score doesn't? (instruction)
Your customer success contact builds toward that with you all year. You're not expected to arrive fluent.
Yes. Assessment items map to Common Core, and we can provide crosswalk documents aligning items to your state's standards. Ask your customer success contact for the crosswalk for your state.
Yes. Site and district leaders can receive monthly updates on usage and progress, and teachers get feedback every two to four weeks during initial launch.
06 Support & Troubleshooting
Yes. Follow-up virtual sessions and optional office hours are part of your implementation. Most sites use at least one additional virtual session before the initial assessment window. Ask your customer success contact to schedule.
Tell us, both are welcome, and they go to the same place. Bugs, questions, and enhancement requests all route through your customer success contact, who logs them with our product team. Include the student or class name, the device, and what you saw on screen; that's usually enough for us to reproduce it quickly.
Support: Support@Kaitlab.com
Send us their name and we'll set up their account and run a catch-up training session. New staff shouldn't have to learn the platform from a colleague's memory.
